Recycling for Earth Day and beyond!

Reusing Our Jars

We've found loads of uses for our uniquely shaped jars. They are perfect for storing small items all around the house. From the pantry to the kitchen to the bath you'll find so many uses for the sturdy jars. Some other uses you may not have thought of are:
  • Use them to make a spice rack for the kitchen
  • Store buttons, clasps, and pins in the sewing room
  • Leftovers are clearly visible in the fridge in our jars and the lids stay on tightly.
  • Fill one of our pasta or salsa jars with soup to take to a friend.
  • Kids who love to collect things have a great way to keep them tidy and keep them on display.

Tours, Press & Customer Appreciation!

Just from the title you can tell that we've been busy! It's been a great week for sure. Friday I was personally able to attend Jam Tour in North Andover, MA at Butcher Boy Market. Even though it was rainy (much like today) we were still able to meet lots of great people and give away a ton of jam samples! It must have been because Stephanie (shown above) was so enthusiastic! Spring Cleaning!

Spring. A time for renewal. The grass is starting to green, flowers are starting to sprout up, and we're taking in the fresh warm air! This past week we've been busy organizing our offices in a company-wide spring cleaning effort.

Spring Cleaning check-list:
• Move furniture to get hard-to-reach dust
• Clean windows
• Wipe down cabinets & baseboards
• Give the fridge, cooktop & oven a good cleaning
• Wash any decorative items that may be getting dusty
• Go through cans & jars to discard anything that may have expired
• If you have a basement or attic sort through and donate unused items

Variation on a Theme

It was a glorious and sunshine-filled weekend here in New England – a nice change from the series of storms that drenched the region over the past few weeks. The Monday morning how-was-your-weekend office chatter included tales of bicycle trips, newly blossoming flora, family gatherings, and loud choruses of peepers heralding the arrival of Spring.

In the Wholesale department, all ears were pricked as Account Executive, Laura, explained how she prepared the previous night’s dinner. She made Shepherd’s Pie. If you’re not familiar with this dish in its “original” form, here’s a brief lesson.

Known by a variety of names (Shepherd’s Pie, Cottage Pie, Potato Top Pie), it is a meat pie originating from England in the late 18th century. The main ingredients are a base of minced beef or lamb and a mashed potato crust. Many variations have occurred in the last couple hundred years as the dish traveled far and wide. In New England, Shepherd’s Pie is traditionally made with ground beef, canned creamed corn, and mashed potatoes.

Here is Laura’s take on this dish:

* 4 medium potatoes
* 1 lb. ground turkey
* ¼ cup Stonewall Kitchen Garlic Rosemary Citrus Sauce
* 1 jar Stonewall Kitchen Spicy Corn Relish
* 3 Tbsp. butter
* ⅓ cup milk
* French Fried Onions (optional)

Preheat oven to 375° F.
Bring a pot of water to boil on the stove.
Have an 8” x 8” baking pan ready.

Peel potatoes and cut into cubes. Drop potatoes into boiling water. Sauté the ground turkey in a skillet, mixing in the Garlic Rosemary Citrus Sauce. Once fully cooked, drain the turkey and spread it evenly on the bottom of the 8” x 8” pan. Layer the Spicy Corn Relish on top of the turkey.

Once the potatoes have cooked until tender, drain and mash them with butter and milk. Then spread them on top of the corn layer. Bake for 30 minutes. If desired, crumble French Fried Onions on top and bake for an additional 5 minutes.
Laura’s husband, Jared, suggested the onion topping. Nice team effort! By the way, Laura and Jared are expecting their first baby -- this Thursday! We can hardly wait to see how she integrates Stonewall Kitchen items into baby food.

Setting the Easter Table

Today is the day I'm doing my food shopping and setting our table for Easter dinner. In last week's blog I mentioned my planned menu; complete with Stonewall kitchen recipes - of course! Today is all about setting the table. Why am I doing this so far ahead of time? 1) I'm just a tad obsessive. 2) We'll be a BBQ tomorrow so I can't get it done then!

Table Setting 101 (Before the guests arrive)
• Iron table linens at least one day ahead of time
• Set the table with all plates, napkins, silverware, & glasses
• Plan out your serving platters. Make sure they'll fit on the table and decide which foods will fit best on each dish

You can simply set the table, or you can be creative with centerpieces, flower arrangements & folded napkins. We have a great step-by-step guide for creating this cuttle little bunny napkin!

Another option, if you find the thought of folding many tiny bunnies to be a bit much, is to simply place the napkin between the dinner & salad plate, like this.

Lights, Camera, Action

Just wanted to let you all know that we are looking forward to an exciting day in our Cooking School today. We are noticing lights and cameras and crew in our Cooking School. PBS is here and it's because Cynthia Finnemore Simonds is cooking in the School today and PBS is filming the class for her show. We are thrilled to be part of the action and to host such a respected author!

Cynthia Finnemore Simonds is the author of Fresh Maine Salads, Superb Maine Soups, and Delicious Maine Desserts; cookbooks from Down East Books. She is currently in production with "Fresh to Flavorful," her own cooking show on PBS and a nationwide project featuring the myriad of stories that depict the Agriculture here in America.
