Memorial Day

The inspiration for this blog began at the local 24/7 store. Yeah, I know it is a pretty bizarre place to get any kind of inspiration but sometimes you just have to go with the flow. You see sitting out front of the store was a WWII veteran and what looked like his grandson. On the shaky card table were a bunch of red silk poppies and a can for donations.

I always put some money in the can and get a poppy to wear. It's a habit I picked up from my Grandmother when I was a little kid. She always bought a poppy and kept it in the visor of her car.

I never actually knew why poppies were worn on Memorial Day. I just googled it and here is what I found. Memorial Day is sometimes called Decoration Day because following the Civil War, people went to cemeteries to place flowers on or to "decorate" the graves of loved ones who died in the war. After World War I, it also became known as Poppy Day after Canadian Army Col. John McRae wrote a poem titled "In Flanders Fields." Now I know!

I am planning on gathering with friends and family for several cookouts. Working here at Stonewall Kitchen sometimes makes it difficult to decide what to grill. We have so many choices of sauces and marinades that I am having a hard time making up my mind. My guess is that I will end up in the store and buy several. My new favorite is our Thai Marinade – it makes shrimp out of this world!

A special thank you to all the servicemen and women, who have served, protected and sacrificed for our country and our freedom.

Not sure what I’ll make yet, but I’ll be wearing a poppy . . .

Jonathan's Top Secret Garden Project

Jonathan has plans for the gardens outside of our York, ME home office and company store. He's been dreaming it up with Jacqueline (of Jacqueline Nooney Landscape Inc.) but won't share the details with us. We're as excited as you are to see how it is going to turn out. So far, we know that there are new rock walls that double as seating. There will also be a water garden... but that's still not finished. Do you want to know what the plantings will be and what it will look like? SO DO I! I hate not being in a secrets! I've tried to think of ways to uncover the plans. I even attempted some old fashioned bribery. I walked out there with my sweetest smile and offered the guys working on our gardens a beautiful tray of perfect photo-shoot cupcakes. Sadly it was no use. They took my bribes but would only tell me that it was a water garden and that they'd been sworn to secrecy!

It looks like we'll both have to wait to know the final results. You can find more photographs in our Facebook album but you should come to York and see the progress for yourself!

Text Color

Remember the spareribs from the local Chinese food place you loved as a kid? Well, this sauce creates a version of those ribs that is a bit more “grown up” and has a kick of heat from red chilies that you will love. Make ribs that are even better than any restaurant or try using this sensational sauce as a dipping sauce for spring rolls or wontons.

Check out these recipes using our new sauce. (I will be picking up some today in our store to try this weekend - grill time!)

The Gift That Gives Life

Several times a year, Stonewall Kitchen’s home office in York hosts an American Red Cross blood drive. The Bloodmobile sets up camp in our parking lot, we post notices, set up a sandwich board at the entrance on Route 1, and when the day arrives, our guests and employees line up to donate. There is always a crowd, and with each new blood drive, our numbers increase.

At our most recent drive, 55 people showed up! The Red Cross was able to collect 32 pints of blood – two more than its goal of 30. And here’s a great statistic: Every pint may be used by up to three different people. So Monday’s drive could help as many as 96 patients in need!

We are proud to be a Platinum Donor with the American Red Cross, as one of the highest yielding blood drives in the state of Maine. We are only able to achieve that because of the altruism of our great guests and employees. Many thanks to all for your support.

Our next blood drive will be on Wednesday, July 14, 2010. Keep watching for details. Free jam may be involved!
